I’m really sorry guys. I thought Enchong was already 100% sure for tomorrow but I guess, some things changed when he caught dengue and got confined in the hospital. Some things had to be re-scheduled and canceled. I hope you understand guys. But let’s hope for the best tomorrow. Let’s pray Enchong will pass by even for just some minutes.

If you’re asked what Star Cinema’s latest film Sa ‘Yo Lamang is all about, you just have to mention Tanging Yaman and you will be understood completely.

Tanging Yaman was released ten years ago and it has remained in our consciousness ever since. Receiving both commercial and critical success, it can be considered as a pioneer of the religious family-ensemble drama genre. This 2010, the director behind this landmark film, Laurice Guillen, returns with Sa ‘Yo Lamang.

Undeniably, the two films have a lot of similarities such as its central theme of faith as well as the famous and memorable fade to white effect. Dominic Ochoa and Shaina Magdayao are the only stars who are included again in Direk Laurice’s ensemble film.

When assessing Sa ‘Yo Lamang, it is inevitable that comparisons will be made with its predecessor. Unlike Tanging Yaman that features three families, Sa ‘Yo Lamang zeroes in on one family, but one that’s plagued with differences and problems just the same.

The film begins with the return of the estranged father Franco (Christopher de Leon) who after a very long time decided to show up, of all occasions, at the housewarming of the family he left behind. The mother Amanda (Lorna Tolentino) is willing to take him back but eldest daughter Dianne (Bea Alonzo) seethes at the thought of forgiving her father, and worse, living in the house she practically built. At first, it was not clear why Dianne became this angry (to the point of telling the ultimate Filipino cussword to her father’s face) but as the story goes on, we discover how Dianne worked almost all her life, sacrificing everything for the sake of her mother and siblings.

It’s not the same for all the kids, however. Coby (Coco Martin), and to some extent James (Enchong Dee) and Lisa (Miles Ocampo), lobby for their father to be given another chance. In the end, Dianne agrees to this arrangement and from there starts the uneasiness and the tension within the household. He discovers what has become of his family, especially Dianne, who has become a cold-hearted control freak who wants to be in charge of the lives of her siblings. He witnesses his other children go through other crises like unwanted pregnancy and a vehicular accident that he himself has almost caused, sending Dianne in to a more heated rage.

The biggest predicament is the one involving Amanda, with her revealing secrets about her current situation and her past. Over time, the great wall between Franco and Dianne comes down and they realize that it is not too late for their family to become whole again.

Direk Laurice and writer Ricky Lee have done a great job giving each character a chance to establish their significance in the plot.

At first, Sa ‘Yo Lamang looks primarily like a Bea Alonzo vehicle, with her standing out in most of the moments and Lorna Tolentino taking the sidelights. But as the film progresses, we see LT’s character develop into a rich and interesting personality and we understand why her character acts a particular way in the beginning. Truly a class act, LT has mastered her craft, and at the same time, effectively supports her co-stars. It is commendable to see how she and Bea complement each other, and when they’re in a moment together, it is just heart wrenching and almost magical.

Much credit should be given to Bea, who has brought life to a spectrum of very different characters in her career and this film has proven that she can rise up to any challenge. In Sa ‘Yo Lamang, Bea brilliantly exhibits a range of emotions, from rage when she’s with her father, pain and vulnerability with her mother, and half-heartedness and repressed feelings when she’s with the men she’s romantically attached to (Zanjoe Marudo and Diether Ocampo).

Christopher de Leon also deviates from the acting we’ve known him for, but still delivers a subdued performance that can make viewers feel his awkward uneasiness. Also notable is how natural Enchong Dee is on-screen that you can see the realness of his character. However, Coco Martin displayed a tendency to go over the top. Despite her small role as Coco’s lover, Shaina Magdayao was able to portray intense emotions. It’s just too bad that Miles Ocampo did not have the innocent charm Shaina had when the latter was cast as the fresh-faced granddaughter in Tanging Yaman.

It is remarkable to see how a seemingly perfect mother is, in fact just like any other human being, also capable of having imperfections.

Also, Sa ‘Yo Lamang kept the religious message to its most realistic and earth-bound influence. While a miracle was a significant device in Tanging Yaman’s most important moment, Sa ‘Yo Lamang stuck to the real deal, to what we can perceive every day, like love, hope, divine guidance and most importantly, acceptance.

Sa ‘Yo Lamang is a solid film that boasts of a straightforward storyline and excellent delivery from most of the cast members. Ironically, if this were relased more than ten years ago, it could have looked too melodramatic and old fashioned. It is a risk for Star Cinema to be releasing the film today because it is different from the usual blockbusters and also because this kind of film is usually reserved for the Metro Manila Film Festival at Christmastime where family values are given a trophy and good box office returns. But considering the current crop of romantic comedies or love stories with foreign songs as titles, the film’s sincerity and “back to basics” style make it stand out. Its realism is also a welcome break to cure viewers who are suffering from fantasy-genre fatigue.

There are no special effects and grandiose production numbers in this movie. But if you’re looking for humanity, emotions and possibly, upliftment and inspiration, Sa ‘Yo Lamang will not disappoint.

This film is graded A by the Cinema Evaluation Board and rated PG-13 by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board.

Sa ‘Yo Lamang suffers from ensemble syndrome. Given that this is a studio production, and it has a cast filled with studio stars, it is a given that the film had to give each of these young actors and actresses their own little moments to shine. The consequence is a series of inane subplots that don’t really have the time to come to satisfying conclusions. But the main thread of the picture is surprisingly strong, and though it can’t fully justify the film’s sticking scenarios, the film still manages to tell a story worth hearing.

After ten long years away, Franco (Christopher de Leon) returns to his family, hoping for forgiveness. Though his wife Amanda (Lorna Tolentino) seems willing to give him a chance, his children aren’t as ready to welcome him back. Eldest daughter Dianne (Bea Alonzo) resents him for leaving her to take care of the family. Son Coby (Coco Martin) has grown to be a failure in a twisted attempt to be closer to his father. The two youngest James and Lisa (Enchong Dee and Miles Ocampo) barely know who he is. Through all of this, each of the members of his family go through their own personal trials, pushing them even further apart.

Though religion colors the corners of the film, the focus falls squarely on the secular world, a place where everyone is subject to human weakness, and prayer might be met with deafening silence. Salvation in this film comes not from the Holy, but from something as mundane as familial acceptance. The characters are all beautifully flawed, the trauma Franco’s absence clearly felt in each of their stories. But at the same time, the need to give each character his or her own little subplot handicaps the storytelling. Some of the endings don’t really feel earned, characters finding happiness and growth almost out of thin air. The subplot involving Coby stands out as the worst resolved, an oddly staged bed scene providing closure that doesn’t really make any sense

But the main thread is strong enough that it nearly justifies all these excesses. The movie does itself favors by mostly focusing on the character of Dianne, as portrayed by Bea Alonzo. The movie undoubtedly works within the framework of heightened melodrama, but it still finds verisimilitude in the emotions of a daughter abandoned by her father, forced to give up the freedom of youth in order to keep her family afloat. Bea Alonzo’s performance is nothing short of phenomenal, shifting subtly between steely determination and a yearning to just be a kid again.

It’s powerful stuff, and the film is smart enough to let its most powerful moments breathe. Though the music swells a lot, it fades at crucial points, cutting through the noise of the melodrama, allowing the truth to be spoken plainly. Technically, the film has its flaws, but it’s dramatically solid. The ensemble has its highs and lows. Christopher de Leon is too conscious of his own acting to ever be natural again. But Lorna Tolentino manages to raise his game with an incredibly generous performance. Again, Bea Alonzo is proving to be a seriously good actress. It is too bad that she is paired here in scenes with Diether Ocampo, who just doesn’t seem able to play well with others.

Sa ‘Yo Lamang is probably two edits away from being a great movie. In its current form, it is too concerned with giving everyone in the ensemble something to do, drawing attention away from a really compelling story with subplots that just don’t have enough time to be properly dealt with. Still, what’s good in it is really quite satisfying. The film is refreshingly mature about the trials and tribulations of family. In its most sublime moments, it avoids all the easy definitions of virtue, showing us characters just struggling to survive within the context of a broken family. They are breaking rules and breaking hearts, just like real people do.

Sa ‘Yo Lamang, a family-oriented film directed by Ms. Laurice Guillen, opened in cinemas starting this Wednesday, September 1. Last night, August 31, the cast members and crew of the movie were able to watch the movie with their family and friends as well as their fans at SM Megamall Cinema 10.

Cast members who were present that night were Shaina Magdayao, who was escorted by co-star Enchong Dee on the red carpet; Bea Alonzo and Lorna Toletino, Zanjoe Marudo, Lauren Young, Miles Ocampo and Igi Boy Flores. Coco Martin was unable to attend that day because he had to attend to an urgent family matter. Ms. Lorna was accompanied by her two sons Ralph and Renz while Ms. Laurice’s daughters, Ina and Ana Feleo, made it a point to grace the event as well.

As part of Star Cinema’s 17th anniversary offering, this movie focuses on a family torn apart by circumstances and personal dilemma. This is similar to another ensemble film directed by Ms. Laurice titled Tanging Yaman. Produced by Star Cinema in 2000, the movie revolves around a matriarch (portrayed by Gloria Romero) who struggled to keep her family intact despite the controversies surrounding them. The film starred Hilda Koronel, Edu Manzano, Dina Bonnevie and Laurice’s husband, Johnny Delgado.

Sa ‘Yo Lamang begins with a house blessing wherein Dianne (Bea) and Amanda (Lorna) are shown to assume the role as heads of the family. In the midst of their celebration, Mr. Alvero (Christopher de Leon) re-enters their home after 10 years of being separated from his family. Amanda and Coby (Coco) eagerly accepts him while Dianne shows her anger at him for abadoning them in the past. The two young children, James (Enchong) and Lisa (Miles) have mixed emotions about the return of their absentee father.

During the premiere night, certain scenes received noticeable applause from the audience. These included the confrontation scene of Bea and Christopher, the love scene of Coco and Shaina, the confrontation scene between Diether Ocampo and Bea, and the crying scenes of Bea and Lorna.

The cast members expressed their happiness and gratitude for the warm reception given by audiences to the movie. They were even more excited about the movie when they learned that it was graded A by the Cinema Evaluation Board.

When asked to point out why should viewers watch the movie, Enchong told the press, “Lahat ng bagay may panahon para masagot yung mga katanungan. Ito ang pelikulang magpapakita ng katotohan niyan.”

At onset, one can spot a number of similarities between 2000’s highly inspiring “Tanging Yaman” and the latest Star Cinema offering, “Sa ‘Yo Lamang.”

More than having the same director (Laurice Guillen), the two films boast of a powerhouse cast, a touching story about a family beset with so many issues, and titles based on popular religious songs.

This is not to say, however, that “Sa Yo Lamang” lacks originality, let alone, merit. The script co-written by Ricky Lee that tells the story of family members who have different, mostly opposing, perceptions on the return of their father after 10 years of absence will make you laugh when you’re about to cry yet pierces deeply, too, when it does.

Breathing life into the story are veteran thespians Christopher de Leon and Lorna Tolentino, who both play parents to the characters of Bea Alonzo, Coco Martin, Enchong Dee, and Miles Ocampo.

Of the bunch, it’s the younger actors who deliver the more memorable performances. Bea’s performance, for one, oozes with confidence, maturity and believability. When she cursed Christopher’s character (the father), it’s as if her mouth was a lethal weapon.

“Sa ‘Yo” is Enchong and Coco’s first mainstream movie, and they don’t disappoint. Enchong has developed emotional depth since his first indie outing in “Paano Ko Sasabihin?”, while Coco is engaging to watch with his relaxed relationship with the cameras.

Even Shaina Magdayao, Diether Ocampo, Zanjoe Marudo, Lauren Young, Empress Schuck and Igi Boy Flores maximized their limited exposure by delivering performances that the audience can sympathize with.

The film’s cinematography is commendable—certainly better than “I Love You,” Laurice’s previous output. The cinematography in “Sa Yo Lamang” is polished, poetic…eloquent in images, almost enough to tell the story by itself.

Yet while the movie allowed the actors to shine in numerous memorable scenes, the lives of the characters they play are just too complicated to be captured in two hours. Nevertheless, “Sa Yo Lamang” has resolution, reconciliation and redemption.

A spiritual journey that reminds people of the values of faith, family, and forgiveness–that’s what “Sa Yo Lamang” is about.

It’s a family drama that hits home; a reminder that forgiveness could be the highest form of love.
