What stars are selling

Just a thought: How far that little candle throws its beams. So shines a good deed in a weary world. – William Shakespeare

TV START: To be a star in the 21st century without a TV network that signed you up and a string of commercial endorsements to proclaim you have arrived is to be a non-star.

If one is young, eligible, beautiful and talented, he or she has got to be affiliated with a network – either 2, 5, or 7, not necessarily in that ascending order. In an industry ruled by TV, any young aspiring actor hoping to make a name in related fields like movies and music and advertising has got to start as a TV star.

He or she can either grow a tail like Alakdana, swim as well as Agua Bendita, transform into a wolf like Angel Locsin, or act perpetually stupid like Mara and forever evil like Clara in “Mara Clara.”

The point is, you’ve got to be seen on TV to promote yourself, a movie, or a CD collection. That’s rule No. 1 if one were to start a career in entertainment in this day and age.

LUCKY STARS: Several veteran actors I have spoken with on many occasions have noted how much more lucky today’s generation of actors are compared to the stars of the past, their past.

Stars today make a lot more money not just on taping teleseryes, shooting films, performing in live shows, and doing products and services endorsements. They also get to travel far and wide, here and abroad, for free and for a fee, in exchange for a few songs mostly done lip-synch style.

What are today’s young stars selling? How many of you swear by the tastes and convincing power of these young actors and actresses?

THE YOUNG ONES: ABS-CBN’s Star Magic, the network’s talent development and management division, recently sent us an update on who’s selling what, the better for audiences to know the studio’s young ones and what they stand for…. or hawk.

GERALD ANDERSON: Star Awards’ Best Actor in a Single Performance for “Lubid,” an episode in “Maalaala Mo Kaya” and star of “Buhawi Jack”: Payless Pancit Shanghai, Unisilver, Dermablend, Chowking, Clear, Century Tuna, Payless Pancit Shanghai and Nescafe.

ERICH GONZALES, star of “Tanging Yaman,” “Katorse,” “Magkaribal”: Jewels, Sisters, Real Leaf, Pantene, Silka, Olay, Boardwalk Timepiece and Accessories, Skechers, Careline Cosmetics, Aficionado, GAOC, Faces and Curves, Freshlook and Secosana. Erich will soon be seen with “Magkaribal” co-star Derek Ramsay in a Star Cinema movie called “Corazon.”

ENCHONG DEE, champion swimmer proved his acting chops in the teleseryes “Katorse,” “Tanging Yaman” and “Magkaribal” and the movies, “Sa ‘Yo Lamang” and “Paano Ko Sasabihin”: Lucky Me Seafood, Coca Cola, Bench, Real Leaf, GAOC and Convergys.

SHAINA MAGDAYAO. Controversy and a widely discussed sex scandal in 2010 failed to dampen the endorsement career of this former child star who shone in the title role of the sexy afternoon drama, “Alyna” and before that, in “Rubi.” Her endorsements include Bench, Calayan, Cose Bags and Accessories, Charmee, Freshlook and Ystilo Salon.

JASON ABALOS: Rugged looks and mass appeal give this intensely gifted young actor edge over his contemporaries. Jason’s recent credits include “Agua Bendita” and “Alyna.” In 2011, Jason gets his biggest break as the title role in “Agimat: Bianong Bulag.” He sells Cotton Club, Jewels, Faces and Curves, Aficionado Perfume, Converse and Gold’s Gym.

MAJA SALVADOR: Star of two forthcoming projects, the indie film “Thelma” and the high-power teleserye, “Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin,” is the face of Jellybean, Sure White, Sisters sanitary napkin, Sun Cellular, RC Cola, and Banana Peel.
