To Be Young and Healthy
It’s never too early to start on a healthy lifestyle. In fact, the earlier people realize this, the better.
Reel-life sweethearts and good friends Enchong Dee and Erich Gonzales are only two of the many young people, and showbiz personalities at that, who have decided to take the higher road by taking care of their wellbeing despite their heavy workload. To prove their dedication and commitment to striking a healthy balance between work and wellness, the two have agreed on Wellbeing’s challenge at Dusit Thani’s DFit Gym, to show us how fit and healthy they really are, not only because they have recently signed on as ambassadors for Real Leaf Green Tea but because they are the real thing. Read on.
Wellbeing: Everybody knows that Enchong is a swimmer/athlete so it’s a given that Enchong does maintain a healthy lifestyle. So this question is for Erich, on a scale of one to 10, 10 being the highest, how healthy would you rate yourselves?
Erich: That’s a difficult question to answer but I would like to think that I am still quite healthy given the demands of our job. I try to sleep as much as I can or at least take power naps in between tapings and shoots to compensate for lack of sleep. I also try to eat as healthy as possible although medyo mahirap because I love to eat especially kung kulang sa tulog. I’ve already eliminated pork from my diet. It started about five years ago. Now I’ve been eating mostly vegetables and fruits. I try to stay away from eggs and chicken because of my allergies din. I’d have to take antihistamine when I do eat poultry, otherwise I’d get rashes all over.
Enchong: Before the Bench Body fashion show, I was going to the gym almost everyday but now that it’s over, I’m taking a break right now. What I do right now is run inside the village because it’s safe. I do that at least twice or thrice a week. And I still swim. It’s hard to take that part out of me. At least once a week but that’s for long hours – like three hours or more kasi gusto ko matagal.
How about you Erich, what kind of activities are you into?
Erich: When I was in high school and I had not joined showbusiness yet, I would play volleyball and badminton. I even play basketball because my brother is a member of the varsity team. I was one of the boys! I’ve never really tried going to the gym on a regular basis but what I would like to do are extreme sports. Someday, I would like to try skydiving. I remember this one time when we were in Florida (U.S.A.) we tried one of the extreme rides na nakakalula talaga. It felt like my heart stopped in mid-air but I had so much fun. If I were to choose between going on a tour and going out camping or trekking or mountain climbing, I’d chose the latter. Those are the things that I would like to try kahit may asthma ako. Although it’s also interesting to know history and culture of other places, mas gusto ko kasi yung may ganap. Right now I look forward to joining Sportsfest and Fun Runs like the ones that ABS recently had. Sometimes I get to play Badminton with Melissa, Beauty, Kitkat, and Empress at Celebrity Sports Plaza.
Enchong: Ako din, I would like to try those things – sky diving and mountain climbing. I’ve tried fake wall climbing, the ones that you see inside the mall. I’ve also tried trekking but I wanna know more about mountain climbing kasi it looks very challenging and I like that.
Apart from agreeing to a workout today with Enchong, what else do both of you love doing together?
Enchong: We love videoke.
Erich: We’re frustrated singers.
Enchong: After we finished doing the movie “I Do” which is still showing in theaters nationwide, we would hang out sa videoke or watch a movie. We still try to do it, pero singit-singit lang sa schedule or tumatakas minsan kapag mahaba ang break sa shoot.
As friends, what do you genuinely like about each other?
Enchong: I like her perserverance with work because people think that this is an easy job, but it’s not. A lot of times we have to sacrifice sleep and you won’t hear her complain. Once we’re already on a take, she’s very helpful pa nga kasi she really stays in character. In a scene, madadala ka niya.
Erich: We have the same goal in the industry. What motivates us is not fame but to be better in our craft. We get a lot of blessings and we just want to prove ourselves because not everybody is given this kind of chance. We really want to make the most out of every opportunity.
So what are the things that you share in common?
Enchong and Erich: Real Leaf Green Tea!
Enchong: I’m so thrilled that Erich and I are joining forces to let everyone experience the kind of refreshment only that drink gives. It’s packed with theanine, an amino acid that is naturally found in tea plants which can help boost focus and alertness. For me, that makes it the perfect pick-me-up drink, the one I choose to keep me right on track every time.
Erich: I’ve always loved drinking tea and I was actually surprised to know that it has honey. I never thought it could be that unique ingredient that can add that hint of gentle sweetness and make it even more delicious. Of all three flavors, Honey Apple, Honey Lemon, and Honey Lychee, I find lychee the yummiest. And that’s the best part about drinking it, it’s tasty and it’s healthy, too.
Enchong: We constantly give gifts to ourselves. It’s like a reward after doing a good job at something. But this was just recently because before we don’t really like spending on ourselves especially if we don’t really need it.
Are you both quiet?
Enchong: That’s where we’re different. Kasi tahimik siya palagi ako…
Erich: No! I can be really, really talkative and I can be so quiet. It depends.
Extremes?
Enchong: Yes. She’s like that. Ako parang ang level ko constantly at seven siya paiba-iba, it’s either one or 10 lang.
Have you two ever fought?
Enchong: Misunderstanding lang. It’s the little things kagaya ng miscommunication. Our relationship wouldn’t be this healthy and rich kung wala. We learn from our mistakes and we learn from each other.
What is it that you most value in relationships, in general?
Enchong: Honesty, because I can easily adjust to any situation as long as people tell me the truth. I want to hear it straight from the people involved rather than hear rumors or intrigues. I’d appreciate it more if it would come straight from them.
Erich: Trust is very important.
What’s your greatest fear?
Enchong: Knives. Yung mga sharp objects. Whenever I see one, it weakens my knees. Ang pakiramdam ko parang binubuksan ang buong parte ng katawan ko. Weird!
Erich: Claustrophobic ako. Kahit sa elevator lang.
How do you handle stress?
Enchong: I pray as a last resort. If all else fails, pray. But the best thing is to talk to someone. Look for a shcok absober, ako I talk to Tito Keren (his manager). And it really helps to unload and release.
