Enchong defends Erich
Enchong Dee stars in Paano Ko Sasabihin, a finalist in the Cinema One Originals independent film festival. The film is a light romantic-comedy about two deaf-mute people who cross paths and start their journey of love. The movie is directed by Richard Legaspi, an award-winning filmmaker whose films have been screened in Pusan, Dubai, Pyonyang, Berlin, Vienna, Budapest and many more.
Enchong stars with his reel (and real?) love interest Erich Gonzales. The two are currently headlining ABS-CBN’s early-evening soap opera Tanging Yaman. Paano Ko Sasabihin is being screened in SM Cinemas.
How did you land your role in Paano Ko Sasabihin?
Cinema One channel head Ronald Arguelles told me he saw me in this role. I’m so grateful that he believes in me and believed that I can do justice to the role. It’s such a good character eh.
Did you experience any pressure doing the movie since this is your first starring role?
No, I didn’t. I would like to think that this movie is like our 500 Days of Summer. It started as this small independent movie with small expectations. And I signed on to this project to learn more….It’s like whether the movie makes money or not—but, of course, Erich (Gonzales) and I wish it would—we were in it for the experience. We just feel so lucky that this is our first film together.
Speaking of Erich, I heard you two are exclusively dating?
Well, we go out and date but it’s only that….We’re just busy with work, like we do a soap and we will do another movie soon, and we also have other commitments individually. Even if we want to see each other more often, we get to do so only in working conditions, and it’s hard. But if we have a chance or more time, we really try.
Are you affected with the rumors that Erich is being gossiped about as…it starts with a “b” and rhymes with witch?
That’s not true. I see her do things that I think normal people would already give up on but Erich is a trouper. I think all that talk is because Erich is experiencing success now. Some people just want to see her fail but I know she can overcome all of that.
Speaking of success, you’re one of the more successful teen matinee idols now. Does it go to your head?
Well, I try to not let it! (Laughs) Seriously, it doesn’t. What I do here is work. If I get to do more than the others, I’m just grateful for all these blessings.
How does your older brother AJ react to this? He is also in show business.
He is very happy for my success. He is very supportive and gives me advice.
But isn’t he jealous of your success. Like you have endorsements left and right….
He is happy, than jealous. (Laughs) We were raised by our family to support each other no matter what. We are already used to the comparisons. We both were swimmers and the comparisons already started there, just like with any other brothers who enter the same business. And now in showbiz, comparisons are bigger and more evident. All I can say is that we’re used to it. Although we don’t like it, we are so used to it that we don’t make it affect us.
