Enchong Dee talks about his controversial kissing scene with Erich Gonzales
During the press conference for Cinema One Original’s special screening of Paano Ko Sasabihin?, Enchong Dee revealed that one of the must-see parts of the movie is his controversial kissing scene with leading lady Erich Gonzales. “Very raw siya kasi that kissing scene was our very first kissing scene onscreen. That was taken around the time we were doing Katorse. Tapos yun nga, parang tinatanong namin yung isa’t isa, paano kaya namin ito gagawin wala pa naman kaming experience,” the young actor explained. It was doubly hard on their part since they had to shoot it in a crowded LRT station. “May time constraint pa kasi hinahabol ng director namin yung liwanag so sabi namin, ‘Game na ‘to.’ Kung ano lang yung alam namin, yun lang din yung lumabas dun sa pelikula. Buti na lang since deaf and mute ang characters sa story, lahat ng galaw nila is very expressive. So it worked for the better. Kaya siguro controversial kasi nga masyadong totoo yung naipakita namin.”
In Paano Ko Sasabihin?, Enchong plays the role of Mike, who learned the sign language when he literally kept silent for a long time due to a traumatic experience in his family. This was actually the greatest challenge of his role for Enchong since he really had to internalize being a deaf-mute to play his character well. “Nakakabigla ng konti kasi nung time na mag-aaral kami ng sign language was time ng pagre-relief [operations] sa Ondoy victims. Hindi kami napayagan makapunta sa relief operations nun kasi may tutorials kami. Kaya parang medyo we felt bad ng konti. Pero okay naman since the movie went well. Tsaka dalawang beses lang kami nag-aral ng sign language ni Erich kaya medyo mahirap para sa amin. Pero buti na lang andun sa set yung instructor namin nung ginagawa namin yung film para at least talagang natural yung actions na maipapakita namin,” he explained.
When asked if it’s possible for him to fall in love with a deaf-mute, Enchong claimed that he’s open to the idea of it, especially when that girl happens to be someone he’s really attracted to. “Parang mahirap na tanong yun ah. Pero kasi sa pagkakaalam ko, tsaka sa mga nakilala namin dun sa workshops namin, sobrang expressive nila. Kahit nga sa movie kapag nakita niyo yung case, masyadong malaki yung movement, masyadong expressive silang lahat kasi one of the ways para makapag-communicate sila sa tao is through their actions. Siguro kung mabibigyan ng chance na ma-in love ako sa isang deaf-mute siguro pwede kasi expressive sila e.” But at the same time, he realized how important words are in expressing one’s feelings to make a relationship work. “Kasi there are lota of ways how to say ‘I love you’—kapag sinasabi mo sa nanay mo, sa girlfriend mo, sa kaibigan mo, parang iba-ibang kahulugan, iba-ibang intonations. Siguro kung gesture I don’t know kung paano ipaparating.”
Enchong was also grateful that their indie film Paano Ko Sasabihin? will be shown to a wider audience with its theatrical run in selected SM Cinemas in Metro Manila from April 16 to 22. “Ang maganda dito walang masyadong pressure kasi nakikita namin ito parang yung movie na 500 Days of Summer. Sinumulan nila yung movie as indie film so hindi sila masyadong nag-expect na kikita ito abroad or mananalo siya ng award. Kumbaga tinignan namin siya as para marami pa kaming experience na matutunan sa ginawa namin. Siyempre hopefully kumita, pero yung expectations hindi tulad ng kapag mainstream yung movie. So swerte na ito yung pinakauna naming film ni Erich,” he maintained.
