Efren happy with his ‘Maalaala Mo Kaya’ episode
CNN Hero of the Year Efren Peñaflorida was more than satisfied with Enchong Dee’s portrayal of him in a recent episode of “Maalaala Mo Kaya.”
“Nakakatuwa. Talagang nakita namin kung paano ibinigay nina Enchong at John Manalo ‘yung best nila para i-portray ‘yung story. Maganda ‘yung pagkakagawa eh. Inspiring ‘yung lumabas at saka touching,” Efren said in his phone interview aired on “Showbiz News Ngayon” on March 2.
A flattered Enchong said, “Ang dami ngang nagsasabi sa kanya na pareho kami ng nuances.”
Organizers of the CNN awards will have the chance to watch the dramatic television retelling of Efren’s life as a young crusader. Efren will provide CNN a copy of the MMK episode.
“Nag-a-ask kasi ng updates ang CNN. Isa sa mga sinabi namin ‘yung ginawang TV-movie. Sinabi namin sa kanila na padadalhan namin sila ng MMK video. Natuwa naman ang CNN na ganu’n ang nangyari,” Efren said.
Enchong was also told about the plan to send a copy of the episode to CNN.
“Sinabi lang niya sa akin. Sabi ko, kung anuman ang mangyari (ay) okay lang kahit ano. Kumbaga, karangalan pa rin naman sa Pilipinas, eh,” Enchong enthused. Then, he profusely thanked those who watched the MMK episode. “Sa lahat ng nanood, maraming-maraming salamat talaga. ‘Yun nga, first time ko (sa MMK) at ang taas-taas ng rating.
Efren is a social worker and teacher by profession. He founded the Dynamic Teen Company, a group engaged in giving street children and gang members an alternative to street violence through education. Efren and his group teach in the unconventional locations such as vacant lots, cemeteries and dump sites. His “pushcart classroom” has become phenomenal in Cavite where he hails.
Efren formed the Dynamic Teen Company in 1997. Now, he has about 2,000 volunteer members. He and his group teach the basics like reading and writing. In addition, their lessons also include personal hygiene.
When he won the CNN award, Efren donated his cash prize of $100,000 to his group.
